Paraguay’s cultural heritage and national drink, tereré is celebrated throughout the country on the last Saturday of February.
In Paraguay, the national day of the tereré is celebrated with dignity, declared in 2011 “cultural heritage and national drink of Paraguay”. Cultural activities (concerts, Paraguayan dances, etc.) are held throughout the country to commemorate this drink that identifies all Paraguayans.
What is the Tereré ?
Tereré is an infusion of yerba mate, similar to mate but prepared with cold water and ice rather than with hot water, and in a slightly larger vessel.

Ingredients
- Yerba mate – 6 tbsp
- Cold water
- Ice cubes
- Lemon juice
- Mint leaves
Instructions
- Take a guampa (a specialized glass for Tereré) and add the yerba mate in it.
- Turn the guampa sideways by covering it with your palm so that the yerba mate moves to one side of the glass.
- Now take the bombilla. We are using the spoon bombilla as it prevents the particles from entering your mouth while sipping.
- Place the bombilla in the empty space at the side of your guampa. Add ice cubes in it.
- Make a mixture of cold water and mint.
- Pour this mixture in and wait for a moment in order to enhance the amount of flavour to your drink.
- Your amazing and refreshing cup of terere is ready for drinking
